Literacy Programs: Motheread/Fatheread
The Minnesota
Humanities Center has been supporting Motheread/Fatheread, Storysharing,
and B.A.B.Y. family literacy curricula in Minnesota since 1991.
These curricula
are designed to strengthen literacy, family communication, and parenting
skills through the reading and discussion of excellent children's
literature. Each curriculum is designed for a specific audience
and includes literature representing diverse cultural traditions.
The Motheread/Fatheread
curriculum serves educators who work with parents. Educators who
use the Motheread/Fatheread curriculum help parents and adults caregivers
learn techniques for reading aloud to children and improve their
reading and writing skills. Parents in Motheread/Fatheread classes
also learn how to discuss important themes, such as honesty and
integrity, that are found in children's literature.
Storysharing
serves childcare providers, school teachers, and other caregivers.
Professionals who use Storysharing read aloud to children, ages
3-11, and help them connect to the stories through discussion, creative
games, artwork, and dramatization.
B.A.B.Y.
serves those professionals who work with pregnant teens and new
moms. This unique curriculum of children's books provides information
on maintaining safe pregnancies and ensuring healthy infant development.
The Minnesota
Humanities Center works in partnership with elementary schools,
child-care providers, Early Childhood Family Education, Head Start,
Even Start, and other community-based sites to offer training and
support of these three curricula. For more information, contact
