Ms. Pamela Brunfelt received her MA in History from Minnesota State
University Mankato and is currently a member of the faculty at Vermilion
Community College in Ely, MN where she teaches courses in American
History and Political Science. As a life-long Iron Ranger and a
historian, Brunfelt has the unique capability to blend her deep
regional knowledge with her scholarship in American History. She
will present many lectures during the workshops, especially putting
the Range in the broader context of American history, and she will
be an available resource to the participants throughout the programs.
Brunfelt's recent publications include "Karl Emil Nygard, Minnesota's
Communist Mayor," published in Minnesota History, and she has
presented at regional study tours, Ironworld lecture series, and
ElderHostel programs.

Dr. David A. Lanegran received his Ph.D. from the University of
Minnesota and is currently the John S. Holl Professor of Geography
and Department Chair of the Department of Geography at Macalester
College, St. Paul, MN. Lanegran will lead the geographic concept
portions of these workshops about the Iron Range and his vast knowledge
of the geography and history of Minnesota in addition to his experience
working with K-12 educators, makes him a valuable resource for all
portions of the seminar. He is author of numerous articles, book
chapters, and urban planning reports. His recent publications include
The
Lake District of Minneapolis: A Neighborhood History with Ernest
Sanden and Grand
Avenue: Renaissance of an Urban Street with Billione Young.
Dr. Lanegran has served on the National Council for Geographic Education,
as the chair of the Minnesota Alliance for Geographic Education
since 1987, has led more than 10 Teacher Institutes with the Minnesota
Humanities Center in the past, and was instrumental in writing the
geography portions of the Minnesota
Academic Standards.

Dr. Arnold Alanen

Dr. Arnold Alanen received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University
of Minnesota and is currently Professor of Landscape Architecture
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Alanen will be a guest lecturer
during the workshops and will speak about his research on Minnesota
steel company towns. He has written extensively about cultural landscapes,
especially those that feature rural areas, immigrant settlements,
early towns plans, and planned communities. He is co-author of the
book, Main
Street Ready-Made: The New Deal Community of Greendale, Wisconsin;
co-editor of Preserving
Cultural Landscapes in America; and author of the 2000 field
guide for the conference of the Vernacular Architecture Forum held
in Duluth. His book, The Making of a Model Town: U.S. Steel and
Morgan Park, Minnesota, is forthcoming.
Dr.
Richard Ojakangas
Dr. Richard Ojakangas received his Ph.D. in Geology from Stanford
and has been a faculty member at the University of Minnesota-Duluth
for 38 years, retiring in 2002. He will provide key workshop lectures
about the geology of the Iron Range and how the area came to be
enriched with such ore. He has done geological research in Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Michigan, Utah, Missouri, California, Puerto Rico, Canada,
Finland, Australia, Antarctica, India, South Africa, and Russia
and traveled extensively elsewhere on geological field trips. His
publications include Minnesota's
Geology and Earth Science, a textbook for students and an accompanying
teacher guide which is a part of the Science Literacy Series.

Dr. Peter Rachleff received his Ph.D. in American History from the
University of Pittsburgh and is currently Professor of History at
Macalester College, St. Paul, MN. He will lead workshop sessions
about the labor movement and labor radicalism on the Iron Range.
Rachleff conducts research in and teaches courses about U.S. labor,
immigration, and African American history. He has tied much of his
teaching and service to interdisciplinary programs, such as Urban
Studies, African American Studies, Comparative North American Studies,
and Women's and Gender Studies. His publications include Hard-Pressed
in the Heartland: The Hormel Strike and the Future of the Labor
Movement as well as numerous articles.
Jennifer
Rian

Ms. Jennifer
Rian is the Education Coordinator at Ironworld Discovery Center.
Ms. Rian works on program development, evaluation, curriculum design,
and meeting state and national academic standards for curriculum.
She taught high school for three years before beginning her current
position. Her knowledge of Iron Range history, the resources available
in the Ironworld
Research Center, and curriculum development will be particularly
useful for participants in these workshops.
Dr.
Marilyn J. Chiat
Dr. Marilyn J. Chiat received her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
She has taught at the University of Minnesota and has lectured extensively
on religious art and architecture in America and abroad. Her books
include America's
Religious Architecture: Sacred Places for Every Community, Handbook
of Synagogue Architecture, and The
Spiritual Traveler, Chicago and Illinois. Chiat has also authored
encyclopedia entries on churches and synagogues, and written numerous
journal articles. She has been a consultant on a number of television
and radio programs, including the Emmy-nominated public television
series Country Spires. She was recently a guest panelist at a Weisman
Art Museum (Minneapolis) symposium, Highway 61 Revisited: Dylans
Road from Minnesota to the World and is active in Friends of B'Nai
Abraham, a group committed to preserving and restoring the B'Nai
Abraham Synagogue in Virginia, MN, the last standing synagogue on
Minnesota's Iron Range.

Craig Hattam

Craig Hattam
works, lives, teaches, and plays golf in Hibbing, MN, on the Iron
Range. He has taught social studies in the Hibbing School District
for more than 20 years. Hattam has also coached golf, wrestling,
and cross country. He first attended a Geography Institute in 1986
at Macalester College and has since been a steering committee member
of the Minnesota Alliance for Geographic Education. Hattam has also
served on the Minnesota Council for the Social Studies Board of
Directors.
Jessica
Winkelaar
Jessica Winkelaar has taught middle school social studies and geography
for more than ten years. She is a member of the Minnesota Alliance
for Geographic Education steering committee and works with a number
of elementary and middle charter schools in Minnesota implementing
content-rich humanities curricula.
